But the pharisees – you can almost hear them huff with displeasure. They are like the older son – always doing what was required of them, never, in their own sight, failing to be a good son. And the celebration angers them – it seems highly unfair that such a fuss should be made over a willful sinner. I would like to suggest that more of us have acted similarly to the older son than perhaps the prodigal. Sometimes we have been more concerned with fairness and justice for ourselves than mercy and compassion towards others.
